Celebrate Pride with Us: Fostering a Safe Haven for All Youth at Western Youth Services

June is here, and the rainbow flag is waving high! It's Pride Month, a time to celebrate the vibrant LGBTQIA+ community, their rich history, and their ongoing fight for equality. At Western Youth Services, we take immense pride (pun intended!) in creating a space where all youth feel welcome, valued, and supported –  regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

A Look Back: The Birth of Pride

Pride Month commemorates the Stonewall riots of 1969, a pivotal moment that ignited the modern LGBTQIA+ rights movement. Every June, we honor the brave individuals who stood up for their rights, raise awareness about the issues LGBTQIA+ people still face today, and celebrate the incredible progress that's been made.

Fun Facts About Pride

Did you know?

  • The very first Pride parade was held in New York City in 1970, marking the first anniversary of Stonewall.
  • The iconic rainbow flag, a symbol of LGBTQIA+ pride and diversity, was designed by an artist named Gilbert Baker in 1978.
  • Pride isn't just a one-day event! Celebrations happen all throughout June, all around the world.

Words of Inspiration from LGBTQIA+ Leaders

"The world needs joy and we need to find joy in our own lives. It's the joy that will keep us going." – Billy Porter

"It is revolutionary for any trans person to choose to be seen and visible in a world that tells us we should not exist." – Laverne Cox

"We should indeed keep calm in the face of difference, and live our lives in a state of inclusion and wonder at the diversity of humanity." – George Takei
